Alpha is the market leader in undertaking in-depth benchmarking studies
Our studies provide in-depth analysis of all areas of the business and include our long-running Operations and IT Benchmarking Study and are underpinned with unique and proprietary data collected over numerous years.
Our approach is rigorous and focused on providing deep insights into the area of business under investigation. Key features include:
- Analysis that assesses and compares efficiency at the function level allowing a more accurate comparison of managers with different business profiles
- Tailored outputs that include qualitative findings and participant-specific analysis to uncover deeper insights and to identify practical actions to improve performance
- Syndicate of leading investment managers - submitting data on a confidential basis. We do not sell reports to parties outside of the syndicate
- We employ a multi-stage data verification process involving senior specialists, and include interviews, historical checks and cross-correlation analysis to ensure accuracy
- All benchmarking studies are designed to be action oriented so that participants can act on specific recommendations for improvement
Our clients often cite a number of the reasons
for regularly benchmarking their businesses.
Common reasons include:
- Annual Health-Check: regular participation to ensure everything is in hand and that issues raised in previous years have been suitably addressed
- Outsourcing Contractual Benchmarking and/or Renewal Point: rigorous review of current outsourcing fee rates and benchmarking to the market – either to support an agreed benchmarking point or as input into renewal discussions/decisions
- Ongoing Outsourcing Service/Fee Management: annual check that the outsourcer is providing market leading services and fees to support ongoing service management discussions (and sometimes fee disputes)
- Strategic Review of Internal vs Outsourced: input into strategic decision as to whether to pursue an outsourcing strategy
- Specific Cost Management/Reduction: heat-map to support strategic (& tactical) cost reduction
- Internal Service Management Review: review for outsourced managers that the internally retained service management layer is of an appropriate scale/cost
- Baseline for Major Change: providing an operational service and cost baseline prior to implementing major change to allow a proper post-implementation assessment of achievement of business case benefits

Distribution Benchmarking
Alpha in association with Spence Marketing Intelligence is running a ground-breaking, Pan-European Distribution Study to address some of the key strategic questions facing companies in their Sales, Marketing and Client Relationship Management functions.
By combining proven industry acumen with Alpha’s robust data-led analysis, the survey will identify actionable steps to improve sales and increase efficiency and provide a unique insight into some of the strategic issues facing Heads of Distribution, including:
- Which distribution strategies best generate growth and client loyalty?
- How effective is my sales process, and how might it be improved?
- How efficient is my ability to generate sales vs. my capability to keep business?
- To what extent should I focus my distribution efforts, geographically and by product, in order to increase efficiency?
- Which business is the most ‘sticky’; and how expensive should it be to acquire such business?
- What drives rebates down most successfully?
Property Benchmarking
Alpha, in association with Affinity
Systems, is about to launch a
ground-breaking study to analyse and
benchmark operational cost efficiency and
service delivery across leading European

performance
- Incorporates (but does not
duplicate) the output from other surveys
and services (e.g. IPD, Real)
- Not only compares participant
efficiency levels for each of the
following Property Asset Management
functions, but also correlates these
with process, organisational and service
quality metrics to deliver meaningful
insight at a participant and industry
level:
- Fund Management
- Research
- Fund Accounting
- Financial Administration
- Treasury
- Asset Management
- Property Management
- Client Service
- Sales & Distribution
- Support Functions (including IT, Business Support, Corporate Accounting, Premises, Business Continuity etc)
Fund of Hedge Funds Benchmarking
In 2010 Alpha launched a Fund of Hedge
Funds benchmarking study focusing on
Investment and Client operations. This is
the first study of its kind in the
alternative space and a number of leading
managers are participating. In addition to
the usual cost and service level analysis,
this study also focuses on how well
companies are meeting the emerging best
practice and what changes they are
implementing in light of increasing client
pressures following the credit crunch.

Alpha is planning a new benchmarking
study to help asset managers better

of their service providers. The study will
build on our market-leading Operations and
IT Benchmarking Study and provides an
in-depth comparison of the efficiency of
institutional client service processes as
well as surveying a range of customers
across Europe to assess their key buyer
values and how these differ by market. It
will also compare and contrast the perceived
performance of the participating companies’
client service with those of the other

surveyed customers.
